Known as the sunniest and the southernmost ski resort in Europe,
Pamporovo enjoys mild winters with a lot of snow and number of sunny days
during the season from December to May exceeding 120 days. It is placed
in the Rodopi Mountains, famous for being the birth place of the mythical
singer Orpheus. It received its name from the convoys of mules of the
Raicho Belev, a man from the town of Smolyan, which followed one another
as the wagons of a train (from the Turkish word for train
- pampor) carrying goods.
Location
Pamporovo is situated on 1650 m a.s.l. at the foot of Mount
Snezhanka (1926 m a.s.l.). It is 240 km far from Sofia, 85 km from Plovdiv,
16 km from Smolyan, 12 km from Chepelare and some 35 away from Devin.
How to get there

It takes about 1:30 h to get there. Buses and minibuses start from Rodopi

Weather
conditions
Due to the influence of the Mediterranean climate the temperatures
in the resort have small daily variations. The surrounding high peaks
keep it from the winds and in winter preserve the snow cover on the northern
slopes of the Snezhanka and Murgavets peaks. The resort enjoys more than
240 sunny days a year. The average annual temperature here is 8.5°C
and its blanket of snow in winter is between 140 and 150 cm. Snow stays
between 150 and 200 days a year and makes Pamporovo into paradise for
all ski and snowboard maniacs.
Where to stay
Pamporovo is famous not only as a ski, but also as a summer
resort. That is why there are many facilities as means of accommodation.
As they are usually fully booked in advance for the duration of the ski
season, it would be good if you book a place there at least few months
before arrival.

Apres ski
One of the symbols of Pamporovo is the high transmission tower
on Mt. Snezhanka. At the tower there ia a panorama coffee-bar and it is
reached by a chair-lift. When the weather conditions are good the view
over the mountains is really terrific. Sightseeing Plovdiv is a good option
for one day trips (especially if you have already rented a car!). En-route
you will pass by the Bachkovo Monastery the second largest in Bulgaria. The
architectural reserve Shiroka Luka is just 15 km from the resort itself.
The numerous old houses, which have preserved the typical Rhodopean architecture,
the winding narrow-pebbled streets, the arched bridges at the river, the
traditions, songs and speech of the local people give one the opportunity
to submerge into the atmosphere of long past times and to feel the Bulgarian
culture and spirit. The town of Devin (some 35 km from Pamporovo) is famous
for its mineral springs and swimming pools that could provide you with
real delight after the exhausting skiing.
Snowshoeing tours may also entertain you or members of your
family outside skiing. Snowshoeing is another way of exploring
the mountains - spectacular views, hidden below the snow paths, memorable
experience of the quiet and serenity of the landscape with virgin snowcoverage
but also quite unpredictable as regards to changing conditions (weather,
waymarks availability etc.). Snowshoeing in the Rodopi Mountains is challenging
adventure. No matter how deep the snow is this is the perfect place for
outdoor enthusiasts of all ages to face the invigorating exercise of walking
on the surface of the white array of Rodopi Mountains through dense forests,
alpine meadows and remote villages.
Medical and dental services
At
the moment, certain vaccinations or inoculation may be recommended (although
are not compulsory) for Bulgaria. Nonetheless, regulation are subject
to change, and passengers are reminded that they are responsible for complying
with entry and health requirements for all countries they intend to visit.
Also, we feel we should point out in some foreign countries general standards
of hygiene, safety, public services and efficiency may differ from those
in your country, and changes in climate, diet and food preparation can
lead to incidents of stomach upsets. Please therefore exercise greater
care for your own protection and health in matters of hygiene and choice
of food and drink. All the resort we feature in Bulgaria have well equipped
polyclinics. However, charges for first aid, treatments courses and medication
can be substantial, and in the unfortunate event of you requiring medical
treatment during your holiday, and incurring costs, it is well worth ensuring
that you have adequate insurance.
The Emergency SKI PATROL service is available 24 hours a
day. Ambulance and clinic (with doctor and nurse) are available, as well
as first aid, on all ski slopes. Highly qualified dentists are available
at the resorts too.
Pharmacies are available at the resorts.
Some medical and all dental services must be cash to the doctors
(clinics). They should provide the necessary bills, receipts and invoices
describing the service and the cost, so that you can claim back the expense
to your insurance company. It's recommended you call your insurance company
and inform them in case of injury.
