Borovets is the oldest Bulgarian winter resort with a history dating back to the year of 1896!
Established at the end of the 19-th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian kings, Borovets gradually developed into a modern ski resort of high-class and luxury hotels, haute-cuisine restaurants and an excellent network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of Rila Mountains, providing excellent opportunities for the whole range of winter sports — from Alpine to cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon. The resort twice hosted World Cup Alpine skiing rounds, while the biathlon track is one of the best in the world.

  Location
At 1350 m. a.s.l. on the Northern slopes of Rila Mountains, among age-old pine woods, Borovets is located at the foot of Moussala Peak (2925 m a.s.l.) — the highest on the Balkan Peninsula. The resort itself lies some 12 km South-east from the town of Samokov, 73 km in the same direction from Sofia and 126 km westwards from Plovdiv.

  How to get there
Borovets is easily accessible both from Samokov and Sofia and more difficult – from Plovdiv. There is a regular bus transport while during the high season there are many vans starting from “Iug” Bus Station in Sofia or from the bus station in Samokov (every 30-60 minutes). From Sofia it takes about 1:45 h to get to Borovets (20-30 min from Samokov).
Another option is to get to Borovets by car. In order to make your travel independent it is always better to hire a car rather than using cabs with unpredictable rates. There are many guarded parkings in Borovets since almost every hotel has a parking area of its own.

The air in Borovets is crystal clear and totally free of any pollutants, which together with the micro climate conditions among the old spruce trees assures the holiday a real relax.

  Where to stay
Being close to Sofia and offering also perfect access to the mountains even during the summer, Borovets offers great variety of hotels, bungalows etc.
There one could find everything – huge hotels, many luxury and middle-class smaller hotels, Alpine type bungalows, pensions etc. As they are usually fully booked in advance for the duration of the ski season, it would be good if you book a place there at least few months before arrival.

Borovets, Bulgaria  Apres ski
Swimming pools, saunas, small traditional taverns, cafes, fitness centers, billiard, table tennis, night clubs, bars, bowling... it is hard to list all the attractions that could entertain tourists outside skiing. Most of the places work till the early morning and offer good prices and special 'happy hour' discounts and other promotions. The proximity of Sofia provides even more – theatre, opera, shopping, museums, sightseeing tours etc.
Another highlight nearby is the Rila Monastery. It is the biggest monastery in Bulgaria and also one of the most remarkable monuments on the Balkan Peninsula. A visit to the smallest Bulgarian town – Melnik, would be a perfect choice for a recovery day without skiing. It is not only known for its history and architecture but for it is wine too. Original cellars are excavated in the sand pyramids, which surround the town on all sides, and there the famous Melnik wine ripens, matures and is preserved. Nowhere else one can find this technology.
